Is your Wegovy real? Sealed-pen visible checks
Sealed-pen visible checks for spotting a counterfeit Wegovy pen in India.
Overview
Wegovy (semaglutide), manufactured by Novo Nordisk, is one of the most recognised GLP-1 weight-management pens worldwide. In India, Wegovy launched through Novo Nordisk's Indian arm in mid-2025, and demand has run well ahead of supply — which is exactly the condition under which counterfeit and diverted pens tend to appear in unofficial channels.
If you already have a Wegovy pen in hand, or are about to buy one, this page walks through the visible checks you can do on the sealed carton and pen, before injecting. These are observational red flags, not authenticity guarantees — passing every check does not prove a pen is genuine, but failing even one is a reason to pause and verify.
For a side-by-side of all GLP-1 pens sold in India and the cross-brand fake-spotting framework, see the GLP-1 counterfeit hub. For Wegovy's current Indian pharmacy prices and importer details, see the Wegovy India brand page. You can also upload a photo of your Wegovy pen and the tool will flag visible inconsistencies against Novo Nordisk's published packaging.
Red flags to look for
Red flags to look for
These are sealed-carton, pre-injection checks. Do not open or dispose of the pen if something looks wrong — the carton itself is the evidence.
- Brand-name misspellings or spacing errors. The legitimate carton prints Wegovy® with a registered-trademark mark, in Novo Nordisk's signature typeface. Counterfeit cartons commonly reported in GLP-1 seizures show variants like Wegovi, *Wegovy (no ®), WeGovy, or odd kerning between letters. Compare against Novo Nordisk's published packaging photos.
- Holographic seal and tamper-evidence. Genuine Wegovy cartons typically arrive with intact end-flap seals and no signs of re-gluing. Many people commonly report counterfeits with missing holograms, dull/photocopied holograms, or seals that have been sliced and re-stuck.
- Batch number and expiry format. Indian-market Wegovy batch/expiry is laser-printed (not ink-stamped, not stickered) in a consistent font on both the carton and the pen label. Smudged ink, mismatched batch numbers between carton and pen, or stickers pasted over original print are red flags.
- MRP printing in ₹. A legitimately imported pack sold in India will carry an MRP in ₹, the importer's name and address, and a "Manufactured by Novo Nordisk" line. A carton with only USD/EUR/AED pricing, or no MRP panel at all, suggests grey-market diversion rather than authorised Indian import.
- CDSCO import licence / importer details. Authorised Indian-market Wegovy lists the CDSCO-registered importer on the secondary carton. Absence of any Indian importer block, or a vague "imported by" line with no address, is a documented counterfeit pattern.
- Dose-strength colour coding. Wegovy's pen strengths (0.25, 0.5, 1.0, 1.7, 2.4 mg) each use a distinct colour scheme on Novo Nordisk's global artwork. Cartons where the colour looks off-shade, washed out, or where the strength on the carton does not match the pen inside are commonly reported in fake reports.
- Pen window and solution clarity. Through the pen's inspection window, the solution should appear clear and colourless per the label. Cloudiness, particles, or a yellow tint on a sealed unopened pen is a red flag.
- Carton finish and print quality. Genuine Novo Nordisk cartons have crisp, high-resolution printing with consistent font weight. Blurry text, pixelated logos, rough cardboard, or a chemical/solvent smell from the carton are commonly reported counterfeit signs.
If any one of these red flags is present, do not inject. Keep the carton, the pen, the pharmacy bill, and any outer courier packaging together — these are what a pharmacist, doctor, or CDSCO officer will need to investigate further.
What to do if something is off
What to do if something looks off
If your Wegovy pen fails one or more of the visible checks above, the calm path is:
- Stop and do not inject. Set the pen aside in its carton.
- Return to the pharmacist where you bought it, with the bill. Authorised pharmacies are required to trace the supply chain back to the Novo Nordisk distributor.
- Report to CDSCO. Suspected counterfeit medicines can be reported to the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation through their online complaint portal or your state Drug Controller.
- Speak to your prescribing doctor before sourcing a replacement, especially if you are mid-titration — your doctor may want to adjust the schedule.
Glipin is an information tool. We surface visible red flags from photos; we do not chemically test pens and we cannot certify any pen as genuine. For any decision about whether to inject, switch brands, or change your dose, consult your doctor and your pharmacist. You can also re-check pens any time at /check.
Frequently asked questions
Where can I buy verified Wegovy in India?
Wegovy is distributed in India by Novo Nordisk India. The lowest-risk channels are large hospital pharmacies and CDSCO-licensed retail chains that source directly from the Novo Nordisk distributor — for example Apollo, Tata 1mg, Pharmeasy, and Netmeds, when the pen is dispensed against a valid prescription. Always ask for a GST invoice that names the importer. See [the Wegovy India brand page](/brands/wegovy-india) for current listed prices in ₹.
Has CDSCO issued any Wegovy counterfeit advisories?
CDSCO and Novo Nordisk have, at various points, issued global and regional advisories on counterfeit semaglutide pens — including fake Ozempic and Wegovy seized in several countries. For the most current India-specific advisory status, check the CDSCO website's alerts section and confirm with your pharmacist. This page does not replace an official advisory.
Is buying Wegovy from an online pharmacy riskier than a physical shop?
Risk depends on the seller, not the channel. A CDSCO-licensed online pharmacy that issues a GST invoice and ships in a cold-chain pack is generally as safe as a hospital pharmacy. The high-risk pattern many people commonly report is informal sellers on social media, Telegram, or WhatsApp offering Wegovy at deep discounts, often shipped without temperature control and without an Indian importer block on the carton.
My Wegovy carton has English and Arabic text — is that a fake?
Not necessarily, but it is a flag worth checking. Wegovy stock printed for Gulf or other export markets is sometimes diverted into India unofficially. The carton may be genuine Novo Nordisk product but is not the authorised Indian-import SKU, which means no Indian MRP, no Indian importer details, and no CDSCO-traceable supply chain. Discuss with your pharmacist and doctor before using it.
Can Glipin confirm my Wegovy pen is real from a photo?
No. The [/check](/check) tool compares your photo against Novo Nordisk's published packaging artwork and flags visible inconsistencies — misspellings, seal damage, batch-format anomalies, missing importer details. It is a red-flag screen, not a certificate of authenticity. Only laboratory testing can confirm the contents, and only Novo Nordisk can confirm the carton.
The price I was offered is much lower than the Wegovy India MRP. Should I be worried?
A price meaningfully below the listed MRP in ₹ is one of the most commonly reported red flags across all GLP-1 brands, including Wegovy. Genuine Novo Nordisk supply in India is constrained and discounting is limited. Steep discounts often indicate diverted, expired, mishandled, or counterfeit stock. Cross-check against listed prices on [the Wegovy India brand page](/brands/wegovy-india) and consult your doctor before buying.
