What is Wegovy?

What is Wegovy?

Wegovy is the brand name for semaglutide, a once-weekly injectable medication developed by Novo Nordisk. It belongs to a class of medicines called GLP-1 receptor agonists — drugs that mimic a natural gut hormone (glucagon-like peptide-1) which helps regulate appetite and blood sugar.

Unlike its sister product Ozempic (also semaglutide, but approved for type 2 diabetes), Wegovy is specifically approved for chronic weight management. It is prescribed for adults living with obesity, or adults who are overweight and also have weight-related health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol.

How is it taken?

Wegovy comes as a pre-filled disposable injection pen. You inject it once a week, on the same day each week, under the skin of the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. It is not a tablet, and it is not insulin.

Who is it prescribed for in India?

In Indian clinical practice, doctors typically consider Wegovy for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI of 27 or above with conditions such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, or sleep apnoea. It is usually prescribed alongside lifestyle changes — a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity — and sometimes used in patients already on medicines like metformin.

Wegovy is not a cosmetic weight-loss shortcut. It is a long-term prescription medicine that works best when combined with sustained lifestyle change.

Always consult your doctor before starting or changing any GLP-1 medication.

Manufacturer

Who makes Wegovy?

Wegovy is manufactured and marketed by Novo Nordisk, the Danish pharmaceutical company that originally developed semaglutide. Novo Nordisk is the originator of the molecule — Wegovy is not a generic, and as of now semaglutide remains under patent protection in India.

Regulatory status in India

Wegovy has received marketing approval from the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) for chronic weight management in adults. It is distributed in India through Novo Nordisk India Private Limited and authorised pharmaceutical channels.

Availability and stock can vary by city and pharmacist. Prices vary across Indian pharmacies — see the price comparator for current listings.

Glipin does not sell, dispense, or endorse Wegovy. We provide independent tracking and information tools for patients already prescribed a GLP-1 medication by their doctor.

Dose schedule

Typical titration schedule

Wegovy is started at a low dose and slowly increased over about 16–20 weeks. This gradual titration helps the body adjust and reduces side effects like nausea.

The typical pattern used in clinical practice is:

  • Weeks 1–4: 0.25 mg once weekly (starting dose — not a treatment dose)
  • Weeks 5–8: 0.5 mg once weekly
  • Weeks 9–12: 1.0 mg once weekly
  • Weeks 13–16: 1.7 mg once weekly
  • Week 17 onwards: 2.4 mg once weekly (the usual maintenance dose for weight management)

Some patients stay at a lower dose long-term if they respond well or experience side effects at higher doses. Others may take longer to step up between doses. Doctors individualise the schedule based on tolerance, response, and other health conditions.

Wegovy is injected on the same day each week, at any time of day, with or without food. If a dose is missed, the timing of the next dose depends on how many days have passed — this is something your doctor or pharmacist will guide you on.

Your prescribing doctor will set your exact dose based on your response and any side effects.

Side effects

Common side effects

Most side effects of semaglutide are gastrointestinal — related to the stomach and gut — and tend to be strongest in the first few weeks after starting or after a dose increase. They usually settle down as the body adjusts.

Commonly reported experiences include:

  • Nausea — the most frequent complaint, often mild to moderate
  • Decreased appetite and feeling full quickly after small meals
  • Constipation or, in some people, diarrhoea
  • Burping, bloating, indigestion, or acid reflux
  • Tiredness or low energy, especially in the early weeks
  • Headache or mild dizziness
  • Injection-site reactions — redness or itching where the pen was used

Many people in India report that nausea is manageable with smaller meal portions, avoiding very oily or spicy food during titration, and staying hydrated. These effects are usually self-limiting and improve over weeks.

Some people also experience changes in taste, hair shedding during rapid weight loss, or gallbladder-related symptoms.

When to seek urgent help

Contact your doctor immediately if you experience: severe or persistent abdominal pain (especially pain that radiates to the back, which can be a sign of pancreatitis), persistent vomiting or dehydration, signs of an allergic reaction (swelling of the face, lips, or throat, difficulty breathing, severe rash), yellowing of the skin or eyes, severe upper-right abdominal pain (possible gallbladder problems), or symptoms of very low blood sugar if you are also on diabetes medication such as insulin or sulfonylureas.

Do not stop or change your dose without medical advice.
